circling a dying planet and abandoned for the last millennia by the now extinct race responsible for beating that defenceless world to death. The fissures on the surface could be seen quite clearly, even without the aid of the platform’s viewing equipment and Jack…Jack seemed to be drawn to the pitted observation windows as though by magnets.

The reactor was leaking all sorts of poisons out into that already tortured part of space and Jack, of course, went straight in to shut it down. He told me to check the automated systems weren’t going to boot it back up the moment we left and I did just that. Didn’t think anything of it, it’s how we normally seem to work things out. Jack does Immortal Hero, and I do the twiddly bits. Nothing different this time. Except that there was and I didn’t have a clue.

Jack was quieter than usual when we got back into the TARDIS. We didn’t leave straight away; Jack saying he wanted to do one more check on the reactor levels, just to be sure. I agreed; after all, what’s an extra ten hours to me? He was still quiet. I should have known from that, should have picked up on it. Jack doesn’t do quiet unless he’s asleep, and even then, not always. So that was what woke me up, really; the silence and the cool space next to me where there should have been a warm and vital being.

I found him back on the observation deck, hands pressed against the window as though he could reach out and comfort the poor planet if only he tried hard enough, and with the tracks of dried tears heavy on his face. He was freezing; the shutdown of the systems had taken all but the last emergency reserves of life support, none of which were being wasted on something as non-essential as the heating.

#~#~#

“Jack, what are you doing here?” I asked, gently trying to pull him away from the window. He shrugged, but didn’t budge an inch. My Captain, the proverbial immovable object.

“I’m watching the planet, Doctor. I’m being here, watching it die.”

“I can see that, but why? You’ve seen loads of them go; stars, planets. What’s different about this one?”

He bowed his head against the window; looking so vulnerable it stopped me in my tracks and whispered something to the glass that I didn’t catch. “Jack…?”

It was as though I’d dropped a match in a powder-keg. Jack’s hands clenched into fists and he struck the window hard before turning to me. His face was set with anger. “I said, ‘I don’t know’! OK? I don’t know why this damn planet gets me right in my heart, it’s just so…” His anger died away as quickly as it had flared and, voice breaking, he continued. “It’s alone, y’know? It’s so alone. Everyone left, all the people left it in the end because of what it became, through no fault of its own. And someone should… someone should be here with it when it finally stops turning.”

I took his hand, pulling the cold fingers out of the fist and holding it between my own hands. “But why you? No, don’t bite my head off, I’m trying to understand. Why are you so angry?”

“Why me? You have to ask, ‘why me’? It’s because there was no-one there when I died, Doctor. There was no-one there when I died, there was no-one there when I came back from the dead for the very first time and you…you left me. I was alone, and you left me.”

“Jack...oh Jack…that wasn’t me. Well, yes, it was me, of course it was, but it wasn’t me. I don’t know what else to say apart from I’m here for you and I’m not leaving you again. I can’t leave you.”

Jack smiled crookedly at me and stepped closer, taking my head gently between his hands and looking deep into my eyes, as though he could seek out the certainty of what I was saying. His own were bright with tears, turning the blue to drowned sapphires. “No? What happens when you’re forced to regenerate? You won’t be you anymore then, so how can I be sure of whoever comes along next?”

I smiled sadly and wrapped him in my arms, feeling how much he was trembling and hating myself for causing him so much pain, however unintentional it was. “You can’t be sure of that, I can’t be sure of that. What you can be sure of is me, right here, right now, saying this: I love you, Captain. I’m always going to love you and why would I need to regenerate when you keep doing the dangerous stuff for me? I’ve never had such an easy time!”

He laughed slightly and finally returned the embrace, making me shiver as he slid his cold hands downwards to warm them against my skin. “You love me, huh?”

“Yes, I absolutely do. Cold hands and all.”

“What was that stupid saying…? Oh yeah. Cold hands, warm heart. Is that right?”

I pulled away, just far enough to be able to kiss him hard and put my own, by now almost blue, hands against his chest. “It’s the warmest heart I’ve ever known, Jack.”

#~#~#

We both stayed to watch that world turn against itself; wrapped in blankets, not talking but not needing to, either. When the angry glow had finally faded, the small sun’s corona turning black and the last remnants of the atmosphere gone, it was Jack who led me back to the TARDIS. It was Jack who shut the door and, in our bed again, it was Jack who took me, sobbing against my body in a final grief, tears of both sorrow and the re-affirmation of life.

I know that I can’t leave him and that I won’t leave him; I’d cross more than time to keep him. But what if, for him, it becomes too much?

What if he leaves me?

OoO

I'm also grinning like a Cheshire Cat that got the whole damn dairy plus milkman plus pedigree herd of Jersey's becuase finally, there is some good stuff going on. Quite apart from the planned Weekend of Salisbury Smut with the afore-mentioned fawsley to look forward to at some point, possibly November time, dunno exactly, my brother has got a new job that he very much wanted and it's in the UK!! He's home, and so no longer likely to get shot at, other than in the usual happy-go-lucky way of Leicester, which is Very Good News. Also on the Happy Horizon of Me, is the impending visit to these shores (yes folks, for one week only!!) of the one, the only, half_elf_lost! Cue wild, Muppet Show style cheering!

...things were improving ever so slightly, more crap happens. This time, in a torrential rain storm (yes, that old favourite again...) on the M5, the car starts to play up. I nursed it home, only to be told by Hubster that the head gasket had gone. This is a terminal kind of problem if not fixed rapidly. £500.

I'll say that again, just in case you passed out from shock the first time...£500.

Holy
Mother
of
GOD

£500.

Needless to say, what with the 'hand to mouth, every penny budgeted for' kind of hedonistic lifestyle we lead, we were astonished to find that we didn't have a spare £500 lying around in the bathroom. We even checked behind the sofa cushions but nope, still not there. Uncanny.

So I had to beg from a generous Granny. Which is horrible. What's even more horrible is that I can't go and see Grandad on Saturday with Dad. Have I mentioned the whole thing is horrible and that I seem to have spent most of this afternoon in tears, blowing my nose after having been in tears, or about to burst into more tears? No? Well, I have. And two people have died from petrol fumes trying to pump out water at Tewkesbury Rugby Club, which is too fucking tragic for words. Father and son. There aren't words for this situation at the moment.

On a thankfully happier note, you can always rely on Errol the Gay for a truly priceless comedy moment.

I think he's a bit worried by all this water...

That's a close up shot of the wonder and joy (and the Bloody Essential) umbrella that buttonbright and half_elf_lost sent me for my birthday. How damn cool?

I need a large glass of wine. Carry on thinking those happy thoughts, please?

Wainwright the 3rd song on the radio) so we can soldier on through, no probs. Incidentally, Rufus' dad is a much better singer than he is (sorry my entire f-list, but it had to be said...)

Off to make sandwiches for tomorrow, and the to bed to finish LoTR and sob my eyes out again. Odd how this re-read for the umpteenth zillionth time has made me weepy in places not usually a problem. I don't normally howl at the death of Theoden (in the book; I do in the film) but crikey, I did this time. Hubster just patted me fondly and handed me the tissue box. He's a good, good man.

There was some wonderful stories written by the likes of fawsley , alex_quine and liars_dance ; great presents from all sorts of people (more of those in a minute, buttonbright , I'm looking at YOU, yes I am...) and a splendid day in the sunshine. Yes, dear friends, SUNSHINE! So much, in fact, that I got a little bit singed...

Now, those presents. I got a box filled to the brim with <strike>crack </strike>ginger based chewy addictive goodness and the simplest, classiest silver knot bangle from half_elf_lost , some Steeleye Span CD's to add to the collection from Dad, a nifty little potted selection of plants from Em at work, wonga from the in-laws, a book of 'Granny's Household Hints' (again to add to the collection) and a notebook with cat quotations in it from the parents, a TREE from fawsley which will be tracked down one weekend this summer in a wood somewhere in Evesham and which is up there in the Top Five of Coolest Presents EVER, and a day of being thoroughly spoiled by Hubster. Oh, and Mary Poppins on DVD from him as well...

Now this DVD is a bit of a coincidence, due to what the utterly lunatic and supremely silly duo of buttonbright and half_elf_lost clubbed together to get me. I am now the geekily proud owner of a real, genuine, fantstically detailed and carved parrot headed umbrella, just like Mary Poppins! It's incredibly cool, but I'm going to wait to see if I can hook up with the chimbley sweeps until the weather settles down a bit...and if I end up talking like Dick Van Dyke, I rely on one of you lot to hunt me down and kill me for the sake of humanity. That's what you get for writing 'Practically Perfect Slash' (my tag on Mandalay Island RP), and speaking proper wot like those colonials don't...

So, presented up and laughing like a fool at the brolly, Hubster and I went off to Cirencester Park for the Cotswold Show. Lovely! I got to shoot things (targets only, alas), saw men in unifrom on powerful and noisy motorbikes, falconry displays, went on the old fashioned funfair, ate venison sausages, fussed all the rare breed animals (fended off the goat from trying to eat the camera...), and bought LOADS of food. Cheeses, salamis, chocolate sauces, pies, liquorice and coffee, phew! That's tea sorted for a while then...we also had a somewhat giggly evening at Best Friend Helen's and her lovely other half Alan, that involved much food, lots of anoraking over Dr. Who and the discovery of a dessert wine that tasted like prune juice. Very odd.

So now, piccies!

Asian otters snoozing in the sunshine. I've got a cat that sleeps like that...

Reaaly Bad picture of me being a green jacket wannabe, although it's more Davey Crockett with the way my hair's lying!

For nienna_weeper, who likes fwuffy things :)

Traditional rural craft (in both senses, what with him being a coracle maker).

The dead good motorbike display team of the Royal Signals, riding over other team members who'd obviously done something wrong...

Just one bike under that lot, going quite fast...this was the little one. It got bigger...

This is what we do in the British Army on the weekends...! A lot of these guys (and girls) hadn't even been on a motorbike before they got into doing this...

Fifteen bods on three bikes...the two outer ones are simply there for symmetry. Again, going at a fair lick.

And just as the bikes went, this bloke drops in!

Surely I don't have to tell you I went on this...?

And this. I rode a cockerel named Keith...for free, I'd like to add, as I told the man it was my birthday. I have no shame.

One of the loveliest (and sadly, rarest) breeds of cattle there is. The Gloucester.

Mirabelle, the Golden Guernsey goat, just after being told off by me for tring to eat the camera. Didn't stop her having another go...I love goats.

Gloucester Old Spot milk bar is now open for business...

Almost makes you feel guilty about sausage sandwiches...naaaah!

Yep, we got some. Also some 'Afterburn', 'Garlic and Spring Onion' and 'Bonfire Smoked'. Yummo!

Hubster, dithering over scrumptious salami selections, and clutching the cheese and pies.

Here endeth the pic-spam!

Wooot! And possibly even a quick 'YAY!' when no-one's looking...birthday's are great, aren't they? And I know, I know, this is going up a day early to be actually a genuine birthday ficcie, but the bunny was nagging me. He scoots the chair over to get a better view. ‘Well, yeah. I never really got around to upgrading the systems, not in that respect anyway, and I’ve didn’t have the need for it until now.’

The rest of Jack slides into view and he quirks the grin that no Time Lord can resist as he notices the shifted position of the chair. ‘Anything else missing I should know about?’

‘Oh, I dunno. He says he prefers this regeneration to the last one as apparently I dance better in this body and that, seeing as I’m the last and he’s the only, we’d better get down and funky while we can. I think he said funky, at any rate. We seem to have sorted out the old girl trying to throw him out as an anomaly every half an hour; When the moon is sailing like it is now, slanting through the curtain at that exact point where they don’t quite meet, it hits him straight on the face and brings him up to instant wide awake status.

Sean, naturally, doesn’t budge an inch. If Viggo is werewolf, then Bean is pure dormouse and there’s nothing more frustrating than watching someone else sleep like the dead when you can’t get back off again, no matter how hard you try.

Viggo makes a face at the blissfully unaware heap that is Sean, and slips out of bed to go and have insomnia somewhere else in the house. The bed edge, due to the nighttime territorial skirmishes that happen when two people who both like to sprawl share the same duvet, is closer than he thinks. The quiet slipping turns to a muffled thump and he freezes, thinking that he might have woken up Sean after all.

The deep, rhythmic breathing continues uninterrupted, and Viggo gets to his feet, finds the bedroom door by groping and heads off downstairs to raid the biscuit tin. Sean stocked it up yesterday with the devilish delight of plain chocolate digestives and they are sending out their siren call. Viggo wonders if that was what woke him up; they call loudly, those biscuits. Ambling into the moonlit kitchen, he snaffles a couple from the tin. He’s just opened the fridge door for the necessary milk to dunk them in when the kitchen light goes on, scaring the hell out of him and seriously alarming the biscuits, who drop to the kitchen floor en crumby mass.

Needless to say, it’s not burglars, just an owlishly blinking Sean who’d rolled over for a hug, found an empty space and got up to investigate. Viggo, who’s trying to calm his heart rate down, decides that a rumpled Sean standing stark-naked in the middle of the kitchen needs to be reassured that everything is as it should be. Shutting the fridge door and stepping neatly around the crumbs and towards Sean, he reaches out and turns the light back off again.

Moonlight fills the kitchen and it brings out the wolf in them both.

..is the day before Monday and therefore a slightly pants one. Not been a bad weekend really; cracked on again with the decorating and done about 90% of it before the humidity got the better of us and the paint stopped drying properly. I managed to gloss everything apart from the kitchen door, so not a huge amount to do during the week. Helen (she of the picture framing) popped round for a cup of tea, bringing with her the finished Heaton Cooper framing which she has given me for an early birthday present. They. Look. Stunning. I'm now stuck as to where to hang them. Upstairs or downstairs, too many choices!

In other news, I seem to have bruised the pad of my heel quite deeply whilst scampering up and down the step-ladders and am limping around, hoping it gets better by tomorrow as I have a day in the office (which will entail quite a bit of to-ing and fro-ing around the college) and then the final EV visit of the academic year on Tuesday. Sacrifice a chicken or a virgin for me, whatever comes to hand...

On a slightly worrying family front, Granny has been taken into hospital this afternoon, suffering from chronic dehydration, but no further news until test results come back in the morning. Mother will keep me posted...she doesn't sound too concerned at the moment so I doubt if it's really serious, but Granny is nearly 87 and no hospital stay at that age is a good thing. She's gone to Carlisle hospital (where I went with me kiddly problem a couple of years ago). I'll let you know what happens.

And, last but not least, I HAD A BUNNY!!! And brigantine1, you are responsible! Yes, you! I'll get onto it this week, now that I've franticaly jotted down the bones of it...

Dudes, later.

    <lj:music>Aretha Franklin - Think</lj:music>

...but it appears to be Sunday already. When did that happen?? I had a whole week off stretching in front of me a...well..a week ago, but it doesn't seem to have been going that fast, right up until now. It's been a lovely week (even taking into account the little matter of the Great Knicker Abandonment moment) but now I have to face up to going back to work again. Sigh. I've got a really busy week next week as well. Double sigh. I actually feel really chilled out after this week; doing what I want to in my own time has been both a novel experience and an enjoyable one. I could be a housewife, really I could. If only I didn't have those pesky bills to pay...

Any-hoo, we managed to get the dining room end of the sitting/dining room decorated and back together again over the last couple of days (we now have to brace ourselves and do the sitting room end next weekend), so we are now a slightly odd combination of colours. Newly decorated end is a harmonic symphony of clotted cream colour walls and sort of milk chocolate coloured chimney (it's me, of course they're foodie colours!) and the other end is still the rather grubby looking pale green walls and darker green chimney. And yes, we DID need more paint and no, I didn't go back to THAT B&Q, I wussed and made Hubster drive to Cheltenham instead...He, incidentally, nearly drowned himself in the bath by laughing too hard when I confessed what I'd done.

It's been a day of firsts today as well. I finally got to go pillion on the bike this afternoon and all I have to say to that is WOOOOOO-HOOOOOO! I haven't been on a bike for ten years and it's like riding a, well, a bike really, in that it all came back to me. Hubster got some Halford's vouchers for his birthday and so nobly donated them to the cause of his wife having something to hang onto on the bike (ooer!) so we have what are somewhat hysterically called 'love handles' which basically are handles on a belt that clips around the driver. Great fun! I felt very much at home, perched on the back there. My thighs knew about it when we got back, I had forgotten that you control your position on the bike a lot with your leg muscles. Combined with the horrendous bruises the step-ladder treads have inflicted on my shins, Dock Leaf Legs are feeling a little the worse for wear...

The other first has been that Grandad, 94 on the 12th of December, has sent me his first e-mail. Awww...and no, he's NOT getting either my LJ name OR the LOM directions!! The mind boggles at the very thought..

Oh, one other thing. I've re-discovered the wonder of Planet Rock. ACDC is good decorating music, although I did discover that I tended to 'air-roller' rather more than might have been productive. Hey ho.

Hurrah, it's Friday! And it's payday=takeaway dinner day. And it's the last day of work I've got to work for a whole week, so what's not to like? I have various things to do this weekend which might end in my early demise, so bear with me...There's also the small matter of replacing the computer chair...See, we've had it for the better part of six years and it wasn't even a proper 'puter chair, just a large black leather effect swively one that we bought back in the days when we had money to buy large black leather effect swively effect chairs, and it's had a rather hard paper round ever since. And it dieded. So, we don't have an official Chair for the PC at the moment. We've tried the footstool that came with aforementioned black leather effect thingie, one of the dining table chairs (currently being used), the fold up chair that usually lives in the garden, and the rocking chair. In hindsight, the rocking chair was a Bad Idea...Now, if it were just Hubster and I, there wouldn't really be an issue, but there are others in the household to consider. The back of the original chair was used as ambush point, snoozing perch, place to sit and look at the back garden, place to sit and look cute, place to leave small furry mouse and other feline pursuits. Needless to say, there's going to be mutiny in the ranks if something isn't sorted soon.

So, in addition to sourcing new <strike>cat toy</strike> chair this weekend, I/We have to acheive the following:

* Cut the hedge. Hubster (now he's fixed the clippers again after the fuse going) has already made a start, but there's a whole lotta hedge there...
*  Get the car serviced.
*  Do the food shopping
* Buy some tapestry kits for Mother as a gift from Granny. It's complicated...
* Try and buy paint in colours that might not still exsist, it's been so long since we decided on them.
* Get bird food (very important)
* Get cat food (even more important)
* Endeavour to find the time to molest each other in a filthy manner
* Watch the 2nd disc of Two Towers whilst armed with caramel popcorn to lure the bunny out from under the sofa with. Possibly move onto Return of the King.
* Try not to either get lost driving to my brother's new house, or comitting patricide when he can't read the map properly on the way there.

That last ones going to be a whole barrel of laughs...I'll post about it...possiby with piccies of my bro *everyone goes 'awww' until they see the piccies and go 'arrgghhh!'*

I might even try to post on You Know Where this weekend. I owe a couple of people a strip. Well, they know what I mean...
